|
2009 COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP AWARD
Planning will begin soon for the 2010 Hanover Regional Book Festival to be held on Saturday, August 7, 2010. Check back for details!
A big THANK YOU! to the R.E.A.D. volunteers who participated in the festival. The mission of the R.E.A.D.® program is to improve the literacy skills of children through the assistance of registered therapy dog teams as literacy mentors. The Reading Education Assistance Dogs program improves children’s reading and communication skills by employing a powerful method: reading to a dog. But not just any dog. R.E.A.D.® dogs are registered therapy animals who volunteer with their owner/handlers as a team, going to schools, libraries and many other settings as reading companions for children.
Hanover Book Festival Mission Statement: “The goal of the Hanover Book Festival is to raise community awareness of reading, promote reading, and educate about the processes related to writing books, and to encourage and support Virginia’s authors.” |
A HUGE SUCCESS AGAIN THIS YEAR! BOOKS ARE MAGIC!Jonathan did his usual magic with the crowd. Everyone was amazed and awestricken by his performance. Author Cathy Maxwell, along with over 50 more authors from Virginia, was in attendance meeting and greeting her fans.
AUTHORS MET AGENTS & EDITORS including DIANE PARKINSON, an editor with The Wild Rose Press, a publisher of a wide array of romance titles. Diane was on the panel for the Slush Fests. ROBIN MIZELL, an independent literary agent from Athens, Ohio, also participated in the Slush Fests. Currently building her client list, Robin is interested in literary and commercial fiction, graphic novels, young adult fiction and nonfiction, book-length short story collections, prescriptive nonfiction, long-form narrative journalism, neuroscience, psychology, sociology, popular culture, memoir and biography. And MARY VITALE with Wish Book Press filled in for agent Lisa Hagan who was unable to make it due to illness. WRITING WORKSHOPS! The following workshops were presented: "Selling Your Book: The Bookseller's Perspective" presented by Kelly Justice from Fountain Bookstore. "What Your English Teacher Never Told You But Should Have" - a teen workshop presented by Becky Mushko. "Building a Career in Writing" - presented by author Cathy Maxwell "Screenwriting 101" - presented by Meredith Cole "Get Plugged In - The Future of Reading & Publishing" presented by Sandra Dugas from Asylett Press and author Harvey Tate.
SLUSH FEST! This was an awesome opportunity to get feedback on your work from the experts! Interactive workshops with a panel of editors and agents who commented on participants' submissions. Query letters or synopses and the first one or two pages of manuscripts on transparencies were shown and read to the class. Then the panel members gave their opinions and there was some discussion about each piece--a great learning experience for all who attended!
